Classes Offered: Summer 2014
Passion in Learning: Creating Your Own TED Talk
Passion in Learning: Creating Your Own TED Talk most directly reflects our organization’s name and mission statement. Simply put, we believe that the key to being a successful, self-directed learner starts with having experiences that reconnect students to passion in an ‘academic’ setting. A large part of what makes TED talks compelling is the way speakers exude confidence and inspiration. This module endeavors to give that experience to students — one of proudly and effectively sharing an idea to an audience. Just like TED talks, a student’s interests are not limited to ‘math’ or ‘science’, but anything from beat boxing, to classical music, from insights on life experience to the right way to fold a paper towel, to what it means to make it through your life. For some, half of the struggle will be choosing what they want to share from all of the things they are passionate about. For everyone, the camp will involve exploring how to speak confidently in front of a group of people. It will involve figuring out just what makes something hook the listener, ways of collaborating with people you’ve never met before, and how to take research and weave it into a story. Each day students will build on their knowledge, consciously working towards creating a final finished product--their own filmed TED talk. Passion in Learning: Creating Your Own TED Talk is about learning what it means to grapple with something you really care about in an academic setting, and it builds the foundation for harnessing the power of our digital generation in fulfilling, cooperative, and enriching ways.

Sessions offered: July 7th-11th & July 14th-18th.
In the second session the topic is your life and relating to other people, and it's centered around one particular conflict or problem in your life that bothers you.

Leadership is something that we firmly believe can be found and developed in every child. However, leadership skills and traits can often be smothered in the public school system due to the heavy emphasis on conformity and standardization. Students need to be able to develop these characteristics through alternative methods.

In this session, participants will gain steps to effective problem solving, learn more about their personalities to give them good teamwork skills, learn advantages and disadvantages to different leadership behaviors, and engage in a variety of group activities and discussions that will enable self realization of their own leadership styles.
This class can be repeated.

Sessions offered: July 21st-25th & July 28th-Aug 1st

If you’re a captain of a sports team, or aspiring, or a club leader, or if you want to go into business, or if you care about being a leader, this second camp may be for you.

The first camp is good for everybody who likes to do...well... anything.
